Leah Stephens Clark founded Balance Dance Company in 1997. This contemporary youth company has trained hundreds of young women in modern dance. Balance works with several choreographers every season, both local and national. Balance presents several performances including two fully produced concerts at Boise Contemporary Theater, one in November and one in March. She is a role model for her students and other local artists that strive to make a living through their work. As a small business owner, Leah provides other artists paid opportunities to teach, choreograph, design, photograph, and film. The Balance Summer Intensive and the Open Arms Collaboration are two programs Clark initiated to provide more opportunities for local dancers. Clark includes a service learning project in her dance curriculum and this past year partnered with Balance performers with dancers with disabilities to create a joint performance. Many of Leah’s alumni have gone on to study dance in college, and those who don’t credit their educational experiences with Leah as nurturing a strong sense of self, which prepares them for their futures in any career.
