I’m Bad At Parades, By Rachel Reichert

Back in 1990 the State of Idaho celebrated its Centennial and I was selected to be the small pioneer child on its celebratory holiday float. My job was simple: wave to parade spectators. As a small child I enjoyed being comfortable and never took anything too seriously. My uncomfortable dress shoes, the frigid temperature and my distain for parades, encouraged me to take a quick rest; I would sit for a few seconds then return to my big moment in the spotlight. My eyes got heavy. After a few brief seconds the parade had ended and I had found myself lying next to the over-sized teddy bear on the base of the holiday float. I had fallen asleep and failed miserably at being the State of Idaho’s waving pioneer child. I’m bad at parades.
