Six miles east of downtown Boise, on the banks of the Boise River, a company town named Barber once thrived. An integral part of the Boise landscape for thirty years, the lumber mill and townsite closed in 1935 from declining profits and dwindling supplies of raw lumber. The mill, town, and associated buildings vanished from the landscape, the story of its existence buried in the larger historical narrative of Boise. Former residents and employees struggled to keep the story alive over the decades as urban growth reshaped the terrain. Join us as historian Barbara Perry Bauer reveals the story of Barber, Idaho, a company town lost to time.
