California Quail are iconic Idaho birds and are often seen wandering the neighborhoods of Boise. They are fat, happy sounding birds with a distinctive and charming stride. Katherine Grey finds them to be cheerful Boise residents, and she believes many others do as well. Her linocut fits the dimensions of the box well and makes every side of the box interesting and engaging as you follow the birds around its surface. Grey originally drew California Quail Pair in a large sheet of linoleum. She then carved out the design, leaving only the black areas of the design uncarved. She then rolled black ink onto the block and pressed the block into handmade mulberry paper. With the design now transferred to the paper Grey watercolored the shades of blue, red, beige, and the white.
