Mesmerized by the geological uniqueness of the western landscape, vast, often surreal depictions of the outdoor environment is characterized in my work. Figures are rendered faceless, representing the anonymity and isolation of those who reside in rural America. Forms of technology and structures of the past appear within these landscapes, offing an essence of nostalgia or memory. Hinting at the disconnection to mainstream culture, Ashley Carlson's work resonates with ideas of rural estrangement and the ambiguous relationship to technology, particularly the emergence of the internet and the home PC: a means to connect the rural to the urban, the sociocultural to the sparse and the unknown to the curious.
