Intersexions explores ideas relating to boundary crossing and the construction of gender. Personal and political borderlines are constantly being crossed in the rapidly shifting territory of gender identity. These incursions are echoed throughout our collaborative process and through the interplay of form, color and image. Inlay narrative line drawings reference moments of protest and celebration from the 2015 “Add the Words” campaign in Boise, ID. The hand gesture across the mouth representing “being silenced”, the hand cuffs and victory sign are amongst other familiar local motifs. Biomorphic ceramic forms riff on the language of xy chromosomes in a manner that is reminiscent of an equation. Bright color and flocking accentuate humor and add a festive absurdity. These works “queer” the formalist art object and aim to upend viewer’s expectations of craft and ‘aesthetic’ form. The work pays homage to the broader marriage equality movement in the United States. Intersexions is a collaborative work developed during an artist’s residency at Whitireia Community Polytechnic in New Zealand and continued back in Boise, Idaho. This residency project was made possible by funding support from the Idaho Commission on the Arts as well as a Boise State University College of Arts and Sciences Travel Grant. The work has been shown in part or whole in Seattle WA., Boone NC., Greenville NC., Tucson AZ., Wellington New Zealand, Auckland NZ, Queenstown NZ, Columbus GA., and in Boise at Surel’s Place and The Common Well.
