Michael Chambers paintings and drawings are the result of a tussle between what he wants to do and what the painting needs in order to be better. Chambers paints, draws, erases, and sometimes even turns the canvas upside down to see if it makes any sense at all. He starts over often and rethinks everything all the time. The lines and layers of paint and line give the image a history. If you look closely, you can see evidence where a nose moved up on a face or a window in an interior exists behind what’s now a blank wall, or where a shadow looks a lot like it may have once been an angel’s wing. Another way to say it is this is how he plays.
