The sculpture is an enlarged-scale sculpture of a microscopic oceanic organism—a protozoan. Protozoans are a member of the free-floating plankton community whose plant members create oxygen through photosynthesis. Plankton also provide critical life support for the marine food chain and are responsible for 50% of oxygen production through the process of photosynthesis. By highlighting the stunning beauty and complexity of the oceanic world, this sculpture underscores the connection between human survival and the critical stewardship of all water on earth.
