Mary Frances Casper's work explores the rich complexity that underlies the surface of our world. The codes and conventions of our visual world condition us to respond to simple shapes and symbols. It is not until we allow our eyes to adjust and our minds to engage that we begin to see the inner lives of the people and things around us. Juxtaposing shapes and the motion created by hundreds of semi-transparent layers of paint makes the souls of everyday objects apparent, resplendent with vivid experiences, contradictions and calamities. Mary Frances Casper enjoys the contrast between simplicity and complexity, stillness and motion, monochrome and kaleidoscopes of color.
