Artist Rick Friesen long admired the historic homes in Boise’s central addition area. Inspired by experience in home repair, interest in historic preservation, and learning the historic houses were being prepared for either demolition or relocation, he photo-documented the buildings. After attending the late-night relocation of the Wood’s house his fascination deepened. Further inspiration arose after the passing of his friend, Bob Neal—who painted floating houses. A culmination of concepts, Friesen’s manhole cover design features the Fowler house floating among the clouds, surrounded by neighboring homes.
