Idaho Artist CL Young Revisits James Castle's Work in His Home Turned Residency
Release Date: 6/10/2026
BOISE – Selected through a nationwide call and announced in November 2025, Hailey, Idaho-based interdisciplinary artist CL Young joins the James Castle House for an eight-week residency through July 31, 2026. Their work spans writing, performance, installation, and sound, exploring how time, place, and attention shape human experience.
During their residency, Young intends to create both tactile installations and new written works inspired by both the physical and emotional qualities of the James Castle House and the surrounding Collister neighborhood.
"I have been astonished by James Castle's work since I first encountered it as a child walking through the Boise Art Museum," says Young. "I am excited to continue working in response to and in collaboration with the material and nonmaterial qualities of place through a variety of media. I believe that Castle also worked in this spirit: returning over and over again from different angles to spaces, memories, beings, and objects to make records of his experience."
Young is the author of multiple poetry chapbooks, most recently Rose of No Man's Land, in collaboration with Emily Skillings (Belladonna* Collaborative), and What Is Revealed When I Reveal It to You (dancing girl press). Their writing and performances have been shared across the Northwest and beyond, and their work has been published in numerous literary journals.
Young received a Literature Fellowship from the Idaho Commission on the Arts in 2020 and hold a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from Colorado State University. They have also been supported by organizations including the Vermont Studio Center, Naropa University, the Alexa Rose Foundation, Surel's Place, and The Common Well. Learn more at clyoung.info.
