Kicking off this six-part virtual road trip from Boise, Idaho, we'll explore the self-taught artist James Castle and his house. Adventuring into Castle's private spaces, we'll explore the landscapes and places that both informed and made possible more than five decades of his artmaking practice. We'll go inside the site as it stands today, revealing its historic fabric, art and artifact collections, resident artists, and much more.

ABOUT HISTORIC ARTISTS' HOMES AND STUDIOS
Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios (HAHS), a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is a coalition of 48 museums that were the homes and working studios of American artists. The program aims to preserve the nation’s legacy of creativity in the visual arts and to inspire meaningful personal experiences at authentic creative places.

HAHS serves a dynamic and growing national membership by facilitating connections for sharing, learning, conversation, and collective voice. We promote and advocate for HAHS and our member sites and recognize the importance of our nations’ artists and art while nurturing excellence, opportunity, growth, and partnership. HAHS provides vital support and expertise, including technical skills, resources, and thought leadership.

HAHS is deeply committed to representing the full breadth and diversity of our country’s artistic legacy through preserved places nationwide. The program and its membership are growing, and we are proactive in ensuring that through its sites it will tell a fuller story of those artists who have traditionally been underrepresented for their contributions to our cultural heritage including people of color, indigenous, self-taught, and women artists.

Come, witness creativity.
